Questions
Phulkari FAQs
The questions we are asked most often about handmade Phulkari, from how to order to how to care for a finished shawl.
If your question is not answered here, send us a message and we will reply personally.
- Are your Phulkari shawls handmade?
- Yes. Every shawl we offer is embroidered by hand using traditional counted-thread technique. We do not present machine embroidery as handwork.
- What is the difference between Bagh and Phulkari?
- In a Phulkari, the ground fabric stays visible between the motifs. In a Bagh, the embroidery is worked so densely that the fabric is largely or entirely covered, which takes considerably more thread and time.
- Why are no prices shown on the website?
- Pieces are handmade and often one of a kind, so availability and detail vary. We discuss each piece directly, which lets us confirm what is available and answer your questions before anything is agreed.
- How do I place an order?
- Send us a message describing the piece or style you are interested in. We will confirm availability, share full details and arrange delivery from there.
- Can I request a custom shawl?
- Yes. Colours, motifs, fabric, size and embroidery density can all be discussed before work begins. Timelines depend on the complexity of the embroidery requested.
- How long does a custom piece take?
- Hand embroidery cannot be rushed, and a densely embroidered shawl can take weeks or months of intermittent work. We give an honest estimate at the outset rather than a date we cannot keep.
- Will the colour match the photographs exactly?
- Photographs are taken in natural light, but screens differ. If exact shade matters to you, ask and we will describe the piece or send additional photographs before you decide.
- Are small irregularities a defect?
- No. Slight variation in stitch density, motif spacing and thread tension is characteristic of hand embroidery. It is evidence of handwork rather than a fault.
- How should I clean a Phulkari shawl?
- Dry cleaning by someone experienced with hand-embroidered textiles is safest. If washing at home is necessary, use cold water and a mild detergent, avoid wringing, and dry flat away from direct sunlight.
- How should I store my shawl?
- Fold it in a breathable cotton cloth rather than a sealed plastic bag, keep it away from damp and direct light, and refold along different lines occasionally to avoid permanent creases.
- Do you deliver outside the city?
- Delivery is arranged as part of your enquiry. Tell us where you are located and we will confirm the options available to you.
- Can I see more photographs of a piece?
- Yes. Just ask and we will send additional images, including close-ups of the embroidery and the reverse of the fabric.
